I fell in love with this dress immediately. I like navy as an alternative to black, and the cut of the dress is sort of Joan Holloway, and I really like the retro feel of it.

This is a photo from our graduation banquet. It was a semi-formal event. The guidelines for women were "dressy pant outfit or nice dress" so I went for a pencil skirt, semi-dressy shirt combination. I figured it was a safe bet, but a little outside of the box for a formal event with a mostly conservative crowd.
It can be hard to find a balance between fashionable and professional/work appropriate, and while I don't think I would have worn black fishnets to work (nude textured tights/fishnet would be better, I feel) for this semi-formal, yet celebratory event, I thought it added a little subtle fun and interest to my outfit.
